The dead space at the Dillard’s end of North Point Mall is about to get exciting again. The former Lord & Taylor/Belk space is becoming a Von Maur, which marks the first Atlanta location for the midwestern department store chain (and the first Southern location, unless you count Louisville). The store was originally slated to open in November 2011, although whether it manages to pull that off remains to be seen (though the store does have job postings online for fall 2011). But the AJC reports that the new store brings 230 jobs to the area, nevertheless. The store is compared to a Nordstrom, with mid- to -high-end brands in stock, but not quite the luxury market like a Saks or Neiman Marcus. The retail chain boasts free shipping and free gift-wrapping year-round, setting it apart from competition at the start, plus a live pianist to entertain customers while they shop. If the Alpharetta location is successful, we can expect two more stores to open in the Atlanta area, plus other expansions into nearby states.
